"Dyslexia" An auditory processing disorder that causes the individual to have difficulty "sounding out" words and spelling them. They usually dislike reading and writing with a passion. Research says 20% of our population have Dyslexia, so chances are high that you know at least one person with dyslexia. Though there is no "cure" for Dyslexia, there is hope! I tutor with a highly acclaimed and successful program that teaches the student to process spelling, reading, and speaking words correctly so they can succeed in the classroom from elementary - college with success, and lead a productive adult life without the embarrassment of spelling and reading poorly. As a tutor I:
  • use the Susan Barton Reading and Spelling System (Orton-Gillingham).

  • Does your child struggle with reading and spelling? I give FREE assessments to evaluate the potential your child has for this program.
  • Are you an adult (or do you know an adult) who has always struggled with reading and spelling? Factual and detail recall? Are you embarrassed to read in public? You need struggle no longer!
  • I can help ease the frustration and empower you with tools you can use to be able to read and spell with confidence. Each student receives 2 one hour sessions per week. For those who need it, I enrich my program with Phonemic Awareness activities.

Often parents of my students ask me what their child should be reading, or they are apologizing to me for not having their child practice their reading more.   Here is my response: It is extremely important that if your child is being tutored in the Barton System they should ONLY read the texts (word lists, phrases, stories, work sheets) provided by the tutor until they have completed Level 4.  This is important because their brain is learning to decode  language in a systematic manner and we are eliminating "Guessing" of the text.  This is what we call reading a "controlled text".   If your child volunteers to read a few words that they recognize, great...but don't ever force.  Read orally and use Audio stories.  Help  your child's oral vocabulary grow.  As they progress in tutoring they will be amazed when they "see" and "read" a word for the first time that they've had stored up in their oral memory bank.   Your tutor will sup

  MY COLLEGE GRADUATE.. SUMMA CUM LAUDE 5/15/21 I am so incredibly proud of my son, Nathan, who just graduated with his BS in Forestry from the University of Idaho. He was my second Barton graduate. I am so thankful to God for the Barton program! Not only did the skills he learned give him the confidence he needed to attend university but he graduated with honors! Summa Cum Laude! Nathan's advice to anyone struggling with language processing: "Get intervention and don't be ashamed to use accommodations." Nathan has always "owned" his dyslexia.
